The DLC campaigns are also much shorter (3 missions each instead of 5 branching ones) though the maps themselves are generally more complex. Generally speaking I think the DLC campaigns are much more fun than the core campaigns (which I felt relied too much on plot critical heroes and rewarded early game rushes with said heroes too much). The Commonwealth campaign would explain more about what is going on, and one or two of its characters appear in the DLC at some point, but you won't miss much by just moving on. The DLC campaigns are separate stories, but they assume the good ending of the Elven court campaign as canon.
